Students come to us with different needs. We look at their current work, listen to their concerns, and help identify what would make the greatest difference.
Keeping up with coursework
Your student may follow an explanation in class but struggle to begin an assignment independently. We help clarify current concepts and develop a more reliable approach to homework and tests.
Strengthening earlier skills
Difficulty with fractions, equations, or other foundational skills can make a new topic much harder. We work on those gaps while helping your student stay connected to current coursework.
Moving toward greater challenge
Students who are ready to go further may benefit from deeper explanations, unfamiliar problems, and preparation for more advanced work. We help them extend their understanding and explain their reasoning.
How we help students understand math
We help students work toward understanding why a method works, recognizing when to use it, and applying it with greater independence.
1) Find where the difficulty begins
We review assignments, quizzes, or other examples of the student's work. A missed problem may reveal a misunderstood concept, an earlier skill gap, or difficulty deciding how to begin.
2) Explain, practice, and connect
We explain the idea, work through examples together, and connect it to what the student already knows. As understanding develops, we reduce the prompts and ask the student to take more responsibility for the solution.
3) Check for independent understanding
We ask students to explain their reasoning and try a related problem independently. Their responses help us decide whether to move forward, revisit a concept, or approach it differently.
What this can look like
A student learning to solve quadratic equations by factoring may be held back by difficulty factoring expressions or working with negative numbers. We address the missing skill, connect it to the current lesson and then ask the student to try a similar problem independently.

Frequently asked questions
Can tutoring follow my student's schoolwork?
Yes. We can use current assignments, class notes, study guides, and upcoming tests to guide sessions. When an earlier skill is causing difficulty, we also work on that foundation so the student can better understand the current material.
Can you help if my student has gaps from an earlier course?
Yes. We look for earlier concepts or skills that may be interfering with current work and address them alongside the student’s present needs. The starting point depends on what the student understands, rather than their grade level alone.
What should my student bring?
Recent assignments, quizzes or tests, class notes, and any study guides are helpful. Students should also bring the calculator they use in class, when applicable. These materials give us a clearer picture of the course and where support is needed.
How often should my student attend?
That depends on the course, the student’s current needs, and their goals. During the consultation, we can discuss an appropriate schedule and whether ongoing support or help with a particular topic or upcoming test would be useful.

Yes. We offer in-person tutoring at our Davidson office and online tutoring. We can discuss the format and available scheduling options during your consultation.
