When Reading Needs More Targeted Support
-
Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words, often relying on guessing.
-
Slow, effortful reading that makes assignments take longer.
-
Persistent spelling difficulties, even with familiar words.
-
Avoiding reading aloud or becoming frustrated during reading tasks.
Reading remediation focuses on underlying skills that remain difficult, such as sounding out words, spelling, and reading fluently. You do not need to know the cause or have a diagnosis before contacting us. We’ll discuss your concerns and help you consider an appropriate starting point.
Structured Literacy
for Your Student’s Reading Needs
Structured literacy uses explicit, systematic instruction to teach how spoken and written language work. Dr. Meyer tailors instruction to your student’s needs, which may include connecting sounds and letters, reading and spelling words, understanding word parts, building fluency, and making sense of text.
Sounds, Letters
& Words
Build connections between speech sounds and letters, and practice using those connections to read and spell words.
Vocabulary & Word Parts
Develop word knowledge and use roots, prefixes, and suffixes to understand unfamiliar words.
Reading Fluency
Practice reading accurately, at an appropriate pace, and with expression through guided reading and feedback.
Reading Comprehension
Practice identifying main ideas, making inferences, and checking understanding while reading.
How Orton-Gillingham Fits
Orton-Gillingham is an approach to explicit, systematic, multisensory reading instruction that fits within structured literacy. Dr. Meyer can incorporate Orton-Gillingham techniques alongside other instructional methods, selecting instruction around the student’s needs rather than using one fixed program for every learner.
How We Plan Reading Support
Dr. Meyer uses information about your student’s reading skills, previous instruction, and available school records or testing to establish instructional goals. She reviews progress over time and adjusts instruction as needed.
STEP 1
Understand Your Reader
We review your concerns, available school records, and previous testing, then identify reading skills that need closer attention.
STEP 2
Set Learning Goals
Dr. Meyer identifies priority skills and sets instructional goals based on your student’s needs. She plans a structured sequence of instruction, practice, and review.
STEP 3
Teach Targeted
Skills
Dr. Meyer teaches priority skills through clear explanations, modeling, and guided practice. Lessons include review and opportunities to apply skills in reading and spelling.
STEP 4
Review and Adjust
Dr. Meyer reviews student work and reading performance to track progress toward instructional goals. She adjusts instruction and keeps families informed about developing skills and areas needing continued practice.
When an Evaluation May Help
For families seeking a fuller understanding of persistent learning difficulties, Dr. Gary Patrick offers psychoeducational evaluations that explore learning needs and provide recommendations for educational support. Evaluations are a separate, optional service; they are not a prerequisite for contacting us about reading instruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my student need a dyslexia diagnosis before starting?
No. A dyslexia diagnosis is not required to begin reading instruction. Dr. Meyer considers your concerns, your student’s reading skills, and any available school records or previous testing to plan an appropriate starting point. If you are also interested in a formal evaluation, we can discuss that separate service.
How is reading remediation different from homework tutoring?
Homework tutoring focuses on current assignments and coursework. Reading remediation provides systematic instruction in underlying reading and spelling skills that remain difficult over time. Dr. Meyer targets those skills and may use classroom materials to help students apply what they learn.
What ages and grade levels do you support?
Dr. Meyer works with students from kindergarten through high school and community college. Materials and instruction are selected to fit the student’s age, reading skills, and goals.
How will I know whether my student is making progress?
Dr. Meyer monitors progress through informal reading inventories, student work, and classroom performance. She keeps parents informed through conversations, text messages, and phone discussions, and adjusts instruction as needs change.
