Psycho-Educational Evaluations in Davidson, NC

When a student continues to struggle despite extra help, families often want to understand why. A psycho-educational evaluation can bring together information about how the student learns, where difficulties arise, and what kinds of support may help. At The Vinod Learning Center, evaluations are guided by Dr. Gary Patrick, a licensed and board-certified psychologist. The assessment is shaped by the student’s specific concerns rather than a single standard plan.

When might an evaluation help?

An evaluation may be worth discussing when a student has persistent difficulties with reading, writing, math, attention, or other aspects of learning. It can also help when a student works hard but makes less progress than expected, or when parents and teachers see challenges they cannot fully explain. The first step is a conversation about what you have noticed and what you hope to learn.

What can an evaluation explore?

Depending on the reason for the referral, Dr. Patrick may examine factors affecting a student’s learning, including possible learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia. Attention, emotional concerns, and other issues may also be relevant. The goal is to understand the student’s strengths and difficulties more fully so that recommendations address the concerns that led the family to seek an evaluation.

How do psychological and educational evaluations work together?

Dr. Patrick conducts the psychological portion of an evaluation. When an educational evaluation is appropriate, an educator or educational specialist may assess particular academic skills. The educational specialist can work with Dr. Patrick to explain the findings to parents and older students and to connect those findings with practical educational support.

What happens after the evaluation?

Families receive a detailed report explaining the findings and offering recommendations relevant to the student’s needs. These may include learning strategies, academic support, and accommodations to discuss with the student’s school. A review conversation gives families an opportunity to ask questions and understand the recommended next steps.
